Common Application Essay Prompts
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

If I do EA/ED in the US, can I still apply to Hong Kong Universities and elsewhere?
Early action gives you flexibility to still consider Universities from other countries. Early decision is internationally binding. If you make an ED application and you receive an offer, you must withdraw all applications to all other Universities everywhere in the world.
Our Advice for Applying Early Decision: Testing
If you’re reading this as a Form 5 student or younger, and you’re planning to apply early somewhere, you should aim to have ALL your testing done before Form 6 – ideally by June of F5. Take the SAT or ACT at least twice in F5 and finish all your subject tests. If you’re applying Early Decision, you will be working on your college applications earlier than normal. Studying for the ACT or SAT while also working on an early application would be very stressful. (College Board's Big Future says October should be your last possible SAT date, but encourages you to complete your SATs by June.)
Before we advise you on your college list in the summer after F5, we need to have all your scores in front of us. Coming to us with no test scores in hand does not make for a productive conversation starter. There is no way for us to gauge your abilities without these numbers.
Getting your testing done by June of F5 will free up the whole summer before Form 6 year as well as Form 6 fall to work on your application. This will give you time to write the best possible essays, write great answers for the smaller application questions, and decide who will write you the best letters of recommendation. If you also have to study for the SAT or ACT, you're wasting time that could be spent bettering your applications.
Ideally, you should have already achieved scores within your school’s score ranges before Form 6 starts. Taking the ACT or SAT during your Form 5 (including the October, December, March, May SATs or September, October, December, April or June ACTs) would be best. Waiting until the September/October ACTs or October SATs your senior fall will create a serious time crunch and exposes you to certain risks should test dates be cancelled last minute.
If you are last minute about this and haven't finished everything by Form 5, this means the last ACT and SAT date is in October – these scores will usually arrive on time to be considered for Early Decision during the month of November. But this is just a general rule – do not assume it’s true for the school you’re applying to Early Decision!
For some schools, the last ACT date is September, and the last SAT date is October.
